One-syllable: A → AA (+ 的) Two-syllable: AB → AABB
Doubling an adjective makes it vivid rather than stronger. The picture gets sharper; the degree does not go up.
A one-syllable adjective doubles straight: 大 → 大大, 高 → 高高, 慢 → 慢慢.
A two-syllable adjective splits and doubles each half: 干净 → 干干净净, 高兴 → 高高兴兴, 漂亮 → 漂漂亮亮. gān jìng干净gān jìng干净 is wrong.
Before a noun, and at the end of a sentence, the doubled form takes 的.
A doubled adjective already carries its own force. hěn很dà dà大大de的 is wrong, and so is 非常干干净净.
With 地, the doubled form describes how something is done. This is where a learner meets it most.
In speech the 地 is often dropped: 慢慢说.
好好 is read hǎohāo and means "properly" or "thoroughly": 好好休息, 好好学习.
