而且【érqiě】

而且 adds a second point to the first, in the same direction. It opens the second clause, usually after a comma.

Where 和 can't go

和 joins nouns. Adding a second statement about something takes 而且.

• × 他很聪明和很努力 → 他很聪明，而且很努力

Two short adjectives can be joined by 而且 with no comma.

而且 with 还 and 也

还 or 也 often follow 而且, before the verb of the second clause.

In a string of reasons, 而且 brings in the last one.

Same direction, not a contrast

The second point has to agree with the first. A point that goes against it takes 但是.

• × 这个很便宜，而且不好看 → 这个很便宜，但是不好看

The pair 不但…而且 announces the first point in advance; it is a separate point.
