[verb] + [object]
[verb] + 了 / 过 / [number] + [object]
[verb] + [person] + 的 + [object]
A 惯用语 is a short colloquial idiom, usually three characters, whose meaning is figurative. They belong to speech and informal writing, and many carry a note of criticism or teasing.
Most are a one-syllable verb with a two-syllable object, and they behave like any verb + object: 了, a number, or the person affected go in between.
A smaller group are nouns, and take 是 and a measure word like any noun: 铁饭碗 "a job for life", 夜猫子 "night owl", 老好人 "someone who never says no".
The person affected can't go after the whole idiom, the way an object goes after an English verb. It goes inside, usually with 的, or the sentence turns round with 被.
