加以【jiāyǐ】

加以 carries an action – 研究, 分析, 改进, 解决 – and applies it to a thing named earlier in the sentence. It adds no meaning of its own: it turns 研究这个问题 into the more formal 对这个问题加以研究.

The object comes first

Nothing follows the verb after 加以. The thing acted on goes in front, with 对 or as the topic, often before 需要, 应该 or 必须.

• × 我们要加以研究这个问题 → 我们要对这个问题加以研究

Two-syllable verbs

As with other formal light verbs, the verb after 加以 has two syllables.

加以 or 予以

加以 leans towards working on something: 研究, 分析, 说明, 改进, 控制, 保护. 予以 leans towards giving or deciding: 支持, 奖励, 批准, 处罚. Some verbs, such as 解决 and 考虑, take either. 予以 has its own entry.
