[action],以免 + [what you want to avoid]
以免 opens the second clause and names an outcome nobody wants. The first clause is the precaution. It is neutral to formal, and very common in notices, warnings and instructions.
The clause after 以免 can have its own subject.
以免 already carries the "not". What follows is the bad thing itself, stated positively. English "so that you don't" makes a 不 tempting; it reverses the meaning.
以免 always comes in the second clause, after the precaution.
In casual speech 免得 says the same thing, and has its own point. For a goal you want to reach rather than avoid, use 以便.
