あるいは is a formal conjunction and adverb used to present alternatives or express possibility. It has two main uses:
あるいは connects two or more options, similar to English "or." It is more formal than または and is commonly found in written language, speeches, and formal conversation.
It can connect not only nouns but also clauses and sentences:
You can also repeat あるいは to present multiple alternatives, similar to "either...or":
あるいは can also function as an adverb meaning "perhaps" or "possibly," suggesting that something might be the case. In this usage it often appears at the beginning of a sentence or before a verb phrase, and is frequently paired with かもしれない.
