[v5: う-row → え-row] + ば [v1 stem] + れば [する → すれ] + ば / [来る → くれ] + ば
[i-adj 〜い → 〜け] + れば
[na-adj/noun] + であれば / ならば
[verb ない → なけ] + れば [i-adj 〜ない → 〜なけ] + れば
The ば conditional form expresses "if" or "if… then" in Japanese. It presents a condition under which a certain result naturally follows. It is used for general truths, hypothetical situations, and logical consequences.
Verbs (五段 / Godan): Change the final う-row kana to the corresponding え-row kana and add ば.
Verbs (一段 / Ichidan): Remove る and add れば.
Irregular verbs:
い-adjectives: Remove い and add ければ.
な-adjectives / Nouns: + であれば (or ならば).
ば is well-suited for expressing things that are generally or always true – if one condition holds, the result naturally follows.
This makes ば common in proverbs and advice:
ば can express hypothetical or counterfactual situations – things that haven't happened or may not happen.
A common pattern using ば is ~ば~ほど, which means "the more… the more…":
The pattern ~ばいい is used to give advice or suggest a simple solution:
Unlike たら, the ば conditional generally cannot be followed by commands, requests, or volitional expressions in the main clause when the subject of both clauses is different. It works best when the result is a natural consequence rather than a deliberate action.
✗ 雨が降れば、傘を持っていってください。(Unnatural) ✓ 雨が降ったら、傘を持っていってください。
However, when the ば clause and the main clause share the same subject, or when using set patterns like ~ばいい or ~ば~ほど, this restriction does not apply.
