だった

だった is the past of だ: "was", "were". It goes straight after a noun or a な-adjective, and its polite form is でした.

い-adjectives don't take だった

An い-adjective has its own past, 〜かった, and takes no だった. In polite speech it adds です, not でした.

• × 寒いだった → 寒かった
• × 寒いでした → 寒かったです

きれい and ゆうめい有名 end in い but are な-adjectives, so they do take だった: きれいだった.

The negative

"Was not" is じゃなかった, or ではなかった in writing. The polite forms are じゃありませんでした and ではありませんでした.

Inside a longer sentence

Before a noun, or before a word like とき時, the plain だった stays even in a polite sentence. Only the end of the sentence carries the politeness. でした in that position is wrong.
