でございます

でございます is the neutral polite form of the copula だ, commonly used in formal or polite contexts. It conveys respect, humility, or politeness depending on the context. でございます is more formal and polite than です, and is typically heard in formal settings, such as customer service, business interactions, or speeches.

• Honorific Speech: Used to elevate the listener or their in-group, showing extra respect in formal contexts.

  おきゃくさまお客様のおなまえお名前はたなか田中さま様でございますかきごう？

  Is your name Tanaka, sir/madam?

• Humble Speech: Used by the speaker to lower themselves or their in-group when interacting with someone of higher status.

  わたくし私はたんとうしゃ担当者でございます。

  I am the person in charge (humbly).

• Neutral Polite Speech: Replaces です in formal contexts. Note how this does not lower the speaker as they are talking about a subject different from themselves, nor does it elevate the subject as the subject of the sentence is an inanimate object.

  これはかいしゃ会社のたてもの建物でございます。

  This is the building of the company.
