でした is the past of です: "was" or "were". It follows a noun or a な-adjective, and nothing else in the sentence changes.
Add か for a question. With どう it asks how something went.
An い-adjective has a past form of its own, かった, and keeps です as it is.
"Was not" is ではありませんでした: the negative, then でした on the end. In speech では shortens to じゃ.
These go beyond the polite past.
In conversation you will also hear じゃなかったです for "was not". It means the same as じゃありませんでした and is a little less formal.
The negative past of a verb ends in the same でした: たべません食べません → たべませんでした食べませんでした.
The plain past, for talking with friends and family, is だった. Its negative is じゃなかった.
