ではないか

The expression ではないか is used to seek confirmation, express surprise or realization, or make a strong assertion. Depending on context and intonation, it can function quite differently.

Seeking confirmation – "Isn't it…?" / "Right?"

Used when the speaker expects the listener to agree, similar to a tag question in English.

Expressing surprise or realization – "Why, it's…!"

When the speaker notices or discovers something unexpected, ではないか conveys a sense of surprise or exclamation. In this usage, the tone is rising and emphatic.

This usage often carries a feeling of "Well, look at that!" or "It turns out that…!"

Strong assertion – "I'd say that…"

ではないか can also be used rhetorically to assert the speaker's opinion strongly, expecting agreement.

Casual form: じゃないか

In everyday conversation, ではないか is commonly shortened to じゃないか or even じゃない (with rising intonation).

Structure notes

• After nouns and な-adjectives: Noun / な-Adj + ではないか (

  かれ彼はがくせい学生ではないか。

  He's a student, isn't he?
  )

• After verbs and い-adjectives: Plain form + のではないか (

  ちょっとたかい高いのではないか。

  Isn't it a bit expensive?
  )

The の (or ん in casual speech) is used to nominalize the clause before ではないか when following verbs and い-adjectives.
