がある

The expression がある is used to indicate the existence of something or to state that something "there is" or "exists". It is used for inanimate objects, plants, events, and abstract concepts – things that do not move on their own. For living, animate beings (people, animals), use がいる instead.

Expressing existence ("there is / there are")

The most common use of がある is to state that something exists, often at a particular location. The location is marked with the particle に.

Expressing possession ("have")

がある can also express that someone has something. In this case, the possessor is typically the topic (marked with は).

Negative form

The negative of ある is the irregular form ない (casual) or ありません (polite). ある does not follow the regular negative pattern – it does not become ×あらない.

Past tense

Use あった (casual) or ありました (polite) for the past tense, and なかった or ありませんでした for the negative past.

Events and occasions

がある is also used to express that an event or occasion takes place.
