ございます

ございます is the most polite form of ある (to exist, to be, to have). It belongs to 丁寧語 (polite language) and is used in formal situations such as business settings, customer service, public announcements, and when showing deep respect.

As a polite form of ある

ございます replaces あります when a higher level of politeness is required. It indicates the existence or possession of something.

でございます – a very polite form of です

When combined with で, でございます functions as an extremely polite equivalent of です. This is commonly heard in hotels, stores, and formal business interactions.

Fixed expressions

ございます appears in many common set phrases that originated from adjective stems combined with ございます. These are used so frequently that they are best memorized as whole expressions:

• ありがとうございます – Thank you (from 有り難い "rare/grateful")
• おはようございます – Good morning (from 早い "early")
• おめでとうございます – Congratulations (from めでたい "auspicious")

Negative form

The negative form is ございません, which is the polite negative of ありません.

Usage notes

ございます is not typically used in casual conversation. Using it in everyday settings with friends or family would sound unnatural and overly stiff. Reserve it for formal contexts where polite language is expected.
