When used with affirmative verbs or adjectives, ほとんど means "almost all", "most", or "nearly". It indicates that something applies to the great majority of cases.
When modifying a noun directly, ほとんど is often followed by の: ほとんどのひと人 (most people), ほとんどのばあい場合 (in most cases).
When used with negative verbs or adjectives, ほとんど means "hardly", "barely", or "almost not at all". It indicates that something is nearly zero or negligible.
