じゃなかった

じゃなかった is "was not" after a noun or a な-adjective: the casual past of じゃない. It goes straight after the noun, or after the な-adjective with its な dropped.

Polite forms

For polite speech, add です to get じゃなかったです, or use じゃありませんでした, which sounds a little more careful. Both are correct. ではなかった and ではありませんでした are the same forms with the full では, for writing and formal speech.

The past goes on ない, not on です: ×じゃないでした.

• × 学生じゃないでした → 学生じゃなかったです / 学生じゃありませんでした

Common mistakes

An い-adjective makes its own past negative and never takes じゃなかった. A な-adjective loses its な.

• × 楽しいじゃなかった → 楽しくなかった
• × 静かなじゃなかった → 静かじゃなかった

Noticing something

Said with a start, じゃなかった can be about the present: you have just realised something you had wrong. English uses "isn't" here, not "wasn't".
