かのように

The grammar structure かのように means "as if" or "as though", and is used to describe something by comparing it to a hypothetical or imagined situation. It conveys that something appears or behaves in a way that resembles something else, even though it is not actually the case.

The full form is かのように, which attaches to the plain form of verbs, adjectives, and nouns. It is more literary and emphatic than simply using ように alone.

Usage notes

かのように is used in written language, formal speech, and narrative or literary contexts. In casual conversation, speakers may simply use みたいに or ように instead.

The か in かのように is the question particle, lending the meaning of "whether" – literally something like "as though one might wonder if…". This gives the expression a slightly rhetorical or dramatic tone.

Variations

• かのようだ – used at the end of a sentence as a predicate:

  まるでゆめ夢であるかのようだ。

  It is as though it were a dream.

• かのような

  • Noun – modifies a noun directly:
    かれ彼はおうさま王様であるかのようなたいどをとった態度を取った。

    He took on an attitude as if he were a king.

• The adverb まるで ("just like, as if") is very commonly paired with かのように to emphasize the comparison:

  まるでじかん時間がとまった止まったかのようにしずか静かだった。

  It was quiet as if time had stopped.
