[verb ない-form] + ほうがいい [verb ない-form] + ほうがいいです (polite)
The structure ないほうがいい is used to advise someone not to do something. It expresses that it would be better if they refrained from a particular action. It translates to "you had better not…" or "you shouldn't…" in English.
To form it, attach ほうがいい to the plain negative form (ない-form) of the verb:
Adding です at the end makes the expression polite without changing the verb form itself:
While たほうがいい (V[た] + ほうがいい) gives positive advice – recommending someone do something – ないほうがいい gives negative advice – recommending someone not do something.
ないほうがいい can sound like a mild warning or a gentle suggestion depending on tone and context. It is softer than a direct prohibition like 〜~てはいけない (must not), but it still carries a clear recommendation. It is used among friends, family, or when a speaker genuinely believes the listener would benefit from the advice.
