[noun] + 並み [noun] + 並みの + [noun] [noun] + 並みに + [verb / i-adj] 並みの + [noun]

Description

並み after a noun means "on the level of", "as good as": the thing described matches that noun's standard. It attaches straight to the noun, takes の before another noun, and に before a verb or adjective.

This summer is as hot as last year.

× プロ並み上手だ → プロ並みに上手だ

When the noun names a level the subject normally sits below – a child and おとな大人, an amateur and くろうと玄人 – the sentence is praise. With れいねん例年, "a typical year", it means no more than "about the same as usual".

That child talks like an adult.

This winter is about as cold as usual.

"Average"

On its own, 並み means "average, ordinary": なみ並みの before a noun, or なみ並みだ as the predicate. ひとなみ人並み is "as much as most people", and it carries no praise – it is the modest standard of an ordinary life.

I want to live an ordinary life.

I work as hard as anyone.
