なんで

なんで is a casual way to ask **"why"** in Japanese. It is one of three common words for "why," alongside どうして and なぜ. Among these, なんで is the **most informal** and is primarily used in everyday conversation.

Asking "why"

なんで is placed at the beginning of a question or before the part you are asking about.

It can also be used in polite speech by adjusting the sentence ending, though どうして or なぜ may be more appropriate in formal contexts.

Expressing surprise or frustration

なんで is used on its own or in exclamatory sentences to express surprise, frustration, or disbelief – similar to "Why?!" or "How come?!" in English.

Comparison with どうして and なぜ

• なんで – most casual; very common in spoken Japanese

• どうして – neutral; works in both casual and polite settings
• なぜ – most formal; often used in writing and formal speech

Note: なんで as "by what means"

Be aware that なんで can also mean "by what means" (i.e. なん何で = what + で = by/with). Context usually makes the meaning clear.

If the context is about transportation or method, it means "by what means." If the context is about reason, it means "why."
