に引き換え (にひきかえ) is used to express a sharp contrast between two things, people, or situations. It emphasizes that one side is notably different from the other – often with an evaluative or emotional nuance (praise, criticism, disappointment, envy, etc.). It is similar in meaning to "in contrast to," "unlike," or "compared with" in English, but carries a stronger sense of contrast than neutral comparison expressions like にくらべて比べて.
The expression attaches to nouns (often with の or である), or to short clauses nominalized with の:
に引き換え strongly implies that the speaker is evaluating or judging the contrast – one side is typically viewed positively and the other negatively (or vice versa).
