[i-adj] + の [na-adj] + な + の

Description

の after an adjective stands for a noun you don't need to repeat: "the big one", "the quiet one". An い-adjective takes の directly; a な-adjective takes な. The の then takes whatever particle the noun would have taken.

Comparing and choosing

Because の saves repeating the noun, it turns up most when you set two things side by side or pick one out.
