Adjective + の(は) (Adjective) +【のは】

The particle の can function as a pronoun meaning "one", replacing a noun that has already been mentioned or is understood from context. When combined with an adjective, it creates phrases like "the ~ one" in English. This is used when comparing, selecting, or describing items without repeating the noun.

With い-adjectives

Attach の directly after the い-adjective.

With な-adjectives

Use the な form before の.

Common patterns

The の can be followed by various particles such as は, が, を, and も, depending on the role it plays in the sentence.

• ～のは: Marks "the ~ one" as the topic or subject.

  やすい安いのはあまりおいしくない。

  The cheap one isn't very tasty.

• ～のを: Marks "the ~ one" as the object.

  あたらしい新しいのをかった買った。

  I bought the new one.

• ～のが: Marks "the ~ one" as the subject (with verbs like すき好き or ある).

  ちいさい小さいのがいい。

  The small one is good. / I prefer the small one.

Comparing two things

This pattern is especially useful when contrasting two items without repeating the noun.

Note: Do not confuse this nominalizing の with the explanatory のだ／んだ pattern or the possessive の. Here, の simply stands in for a noun.
