The structures のように and のような are used to express similarity or comparison, equivalent to "like ~" or "similar to ~" in English. They allow you to describe something by comparing it to something else.
のように functions adverbially, modifying verbs or adjectives. It describes how an action is performed or how something is.
のような functions adjectivally, modifying a noun that follows it. It describes what kind of noun something is.
The most common usage is after a noun, making a direct comparison.
When the comparison involves a full clause (with a verb), the plain form of the verb comes before ように or ような (without の).
の is used after nouns, while verbs and adjectives connect directly to ように / ような.
みたいに / みたいな is a more casual alternative with the same meaning. とり鳥みたいにとびたい飛びたい means the same as とり鳥のようにとびたい飛びたい, but sounds more conversational. のように / のような is preferred in writing and formal speech.
