そこ

そこ is a demonstrative pronoun meaning "there" or "that place." It refers to a location that is near the listener or has just been mentioned in the conversation. It belongs to the こそあど (ko-so-a-do) system of demonstratives:

• ここ – here (near the speaker)
• そこ – there (near the listener, or a place just mentioned)
• あそこ – over there (far from both the speaker and listener)
• どこ – where (question)

Near the listener

When the listener is standing somewhere or is near a particular place, the speaker uses そこ to refer to that location.

Referring to a previously mentioned place

そこ is also used to refer to a place that has already come up in the conversation, similar to how English uses "there" to refer back to a location.

With particles

そこ commonly pairs with particles like に (indicating direction or location), で (indicating where an action takes place), から (from there), and まで (up to there).

そこ as topic

When そこ is the topic of the sentence, it takes the particle は.
