ざるを得ない【ざるをえない】

ざるを得ない means "have no choice but to": you would rather not, but the situation leaves no other option. Take the ない-form of a verb and replace ない with ざるを得ない – 行かない gives いか行かざるをえない得ない, 認めない gives みとめ認めざるをえない得ない. えない得ない is read えない.

する takes the old stem せ, and くる来る becomes き来ざるをえない得ない, read こざるを得ない.

• × しざるを得ない → せざるを得ない
• × さざるを得ない → せざるを得ない

With verbs of saying and judging – ゆう言う, みとめる認める, かんがえる考える – the pattern softens a blunt verdict: the facts force you to it.

Register

ざるを得ない is formal: news, business, writing and careful speech. In conversation the same thing is しかない after the dictionary form, or 〜～なきゃいけない.

ないわけにはいかない is close, but there the pressure is duty or what people expect of you. With ざるを得ない it is the facts of the situation.
