～なかった is the plain past negative: "didn't". Take the ない-form of the verb and change the final い to かった, the same way an い-adjective makes its past. It is the casual counterpart of ませんでした.
The ない-form has to come first, so a godan verb keeps its あ-row sound: いかない行かない → いかなかった行かなかった. ある goes through plain ない, and くる来る through こない来ない, read こない.
These go beyond a plain "didn't".
As with the ない-form, the thing you didn't do often takes は in place of を, singling it out.
～なかった says something didn't happen at a time that is over. For something that hasn't happened yet but still may, Japanese uses まだ with ～ていない.
