Structure

V[nai-stem] + なかった

Conjugate the verb to its plain negative form and replace the final い with かった:

V5:

かう買う → 買わない → 買わなかった
とる取る → 取らない → 取らなかった
かく書く → 書かない → 書かなかった
のむ飲む → 飲まない → 飲まなかった
はなす話す → 話さない → 話さなかった
まつ待つ → 待たない → 待たなかった
あそぶ遊ぶ → 遊ばない → 遊ばなかった
しぬ死ぬ → 死なない → 死ななかった
およぐ泳ぐ → 泳がない → 泳がなかった

V1:

たべる食べる → 食べない → 食べなかった

Exceptions:

する → しない → しなかった
くる → こない → こなかった
ある → ない → なかった

Description

The ～なかった form is the plain past negative form of verbs in Japanese. It is used in casual speech or writing to describe actions that did not occur in the past.
