不但…而且【búdàn … érqiě】

不但 sets up one point and 而且 adds another that goes further in the same direction. The second point is the bigger or more surprising one.

还 or 也 often follow 而且, or replace it, before the second verb.

Same direction only

Both halves point the same way: two good things or two bad ones. A contrast takes 虽然…但是.

• × 这个菜不但便宜，而且不好吃 → 这个菜虽然便宜，但是不好吃

Where 不但 goes

With one subject for both halves, the subject comes first and 不但 follows it.

• × 不但他会说中文，而且会写 → 他不但会说中文，而且会写

When each half has its own subject, 不但 goes in front of the first subject, and the second usually takes 也.
