[noun / adjective] + 化
化 after a noun or adjective makes a word for turning into that: 现代 "modern" becomes 现代化 "modernize, modernization". The new word works as a verb or a noun, and it's mostly found in news, reports and essays.
With a one-syllable root the result is a fixed word: 美化 "beautify", 绿化 "plant with greenery", 简化 "simplify".
As a verb, a 化 word takes 了, and degree words like 越来越 and 很. It doesn't take a direct object, so the thing being changed goes in front of it, or after 把 when the verb is followed by more.
As a noun it goes after verbs such as 实现 and 推动, or stands as a subject.
化 doesn't attach to any word you like; it works on established roots. Where no 化 word exists, use 变得 + adjective.
