鉴于【jiànyú】

鉴于 names a situation, and the main clause says what has been decided or suggested because of it: "in view of", "given". It goes at the head of the sentence and takes a noun phrase or a whole clause. This is written, official Chinese – notices, reports, announcements.

鉴于此 and 鉴于这种情况 point back at what was just described.

鉴于 or 由于

由于 gives a cause and its natural result. 鉴于 gives the facts someone weighed before acting, so the second clause is a decision, a rule or a recommendation – something people chose to do. When nobody decided anything, 鉴于 is wrong.

• × 鉴于下雨，路很滑 → 由于下雨，路很滑
• × 鉴于他没复习，考得不好 → 由于他没复习，考得不好
