The grammar structure ぶりに is used to express that something is happening for the first time in a specified period of time. It conveys the nuance that a certain amount of time has passed since the last occurrence of an action or event.
A time expression is placed before ぶりに, indicating the duration that has elapsed:
Time period + ぶりに + Verb
The well-known expression ひさしぶり久しぶり ("long time no see") is itself built from ひさし久し (a long time) + ぶり.
When modifying a noun rather than a verb, use ぶりの instead of ぶりに:
The time period can be specific (e.g. みっか3日、いち1しゅうかん週間、はんとし半年、じゅうねん10年) or vague (e.g. ひさし久し、しばらく).
ぶりに always implies a sense of redoing something – the action must have happened before. It cannot be used for something happening for the very first time ever.
The expression carries a slightly emotional or nostalgic nuance, often suggesting that the speaker finds the gap notable or significant.
