The suffix 型 (がた) attaches to nouns to indicate a type, model, pattern, or size category. It is used in everyday Japanese to classify or categorize things – from blood types and product models to personality types and shapes.
One of the most common uses is to describe a specific type or model of something, such as a product, device, or system.
This is also the standard way to talk about blood types in Japanese:
When combined with size-related words like おお大 (おお) or しょう小 (こ), 型 describes a size category.
型 can also describe a pattern, style, or format that something follows.
While たいぷタイプ (the loanword "type") is also common and often interchangeable in casual speech, 型 tends to feel more formal or technical. るい類 (るい) means "kind" or "sort" and groups things by shared characteristics rather than labeling a specific model or pattern.
