以外【いがい】

以外 (いがい) means "except", "other than", or "besides". It is used to exclude a specific item or group and refer to everything else. It attaches directly to nouns, and can also follow verbs and adjectives in certain constructions.

Basic usage with nouns

Attach いがい以外 directly after a noun (with or without the particle の before the following noun) to mean "other than" or "except for."

In a separate but common usage, いがい以外に (or いがい意外に, written with different kanji) can function as an adverb meaning "unexpectedly" or "surprisingly." This adverbial meaning is usually written as いがい意外に (with the kanji 意), but they are pronounced identically, so be aware of the distinction.
