一方で【いっぽうで】

一方で (いっぽうで) is used to present two contrasting or coexisting aspects of a situation. It can mean "on one hand… on the other hand," "while," or "at the same time." Unlike simple contrast conjunctions like けど, 一方で emphasizes that both sides are simultaneously true, often highlighting an interesting duality or balance.

Structure

一方で connects to the preceding clause as follows:

• Verb (plain form)

  • 一方で: べんり便利ないっぽう一方で / べんり便利であるいっぽう一方で

一方で vs. 一方

The particle で can be omitted, yielding 一方. Both forms are largely interchangeable, though 一方で more explicitly marks the contrast and is slightly more common at the beginning of a new sentence.
