きっと

The adverb きっと expresses the speaker's strong belief or confidence that something will happen or is true. It translates to "surely," "certainly," "I'm sure," or "definitely" in English. It conveys a high degree of subjective certainty – the speaker feels strongly about the prediction or assumption, but it is still based on personal conviction rather than objective fact.

Predictions and expectations

きっと is most common when predicting future events or outcomes with confidence.

It often pairs naturally with だろう or でしょう to reinforce the sense of conjecture, though this is not required.

Assumptions about the present or past

きっと can also be used to express a strong assumption about a current situation or something that already happened.

きっと vs. たぶん vs. 必ず

• たぶん ("probably") expresses a lower degree of certainty than きっと. Use たぶん when you're around 60–70% sure, and きっと when you're closer to 85–90% sure.
• かならず必ず ("without fail," "always") expresses objective certainty or obligation – something that is guaranteed or must happen. きっと, by contrast, reflects the speaker's personal conviction and still allows for the possibility of being wrong.
