Note: もまた replaces the topic particle は; it attaches directly to a noun/noun phrase as a topic marker with emphatic "also/too" nuance. 又 may be written in kanji (又) or hiragana (また).

Description

も又 (もまた) is a literary or emphatic way of saying "also", "too", or "likewise". It combines the particle も (also/too) with the adverb また又 (また – again/also), reinforcing the meaning of addition or similarity. While も alone is sufficient in most everyday contexts, adding また又 gives the expression a more formal, written, or rhetorical tone. It is commonly found in essays, speeches, literature, and formal discussions.

Basic usage – "X is also…"

もまた emphasizes that something shares a quality or situation with something previously mentioned, often with a sense of "just like the other, this one too…":

おなじ同じだっ。

He, too, was of the same opinion.

。

This problem, too, is not easy.

Emphasizing parallels

もまた is especially effective when drawing a parallel between two subjects or situations, highlighting that they share the same fate, quality, or condition:

Comparison with も alone

Using も by itself is natural in casual speech: かれ彼もきた来た (He came too). Adding また又 elevates the register and adds rhetorical weight. In everyday conversation, もまた can sound stiff or overly dramatic, so it is best reserved for written language, formal speech, or deliberate emphasis.

Position in the sentence

もまた typically follows the subject or topic noun directly, replacing the particle は or が:

It can also appear after other nouns in the sentence for emphasis, though subject position is by far the most common.
