向き【むき】

向き goes straight after a noun and means "suited to": the thing fits that person or that purpose well. Before another noun it takes の, and it ends a sentence with だ or です.

The negative is 向きではない.

In conversation, a person suiting something is more often にむいている向いている, from the verb むく向く: このしごと仕事はわたくし私にむいていない向いていない.

向き or 向け

むけ向け says something was made for a group, whether or not it suits them. 向き says it suits them, whether or not it was made for them.

Facing a direction

After a direction word, 向き says which way something faces. With に it describes how something is placed.

うわむき上向き also describes a trend going up – the economy, sales, someone's mood.
