Structure

[verb (plain)] + んだって [i-adj] + んだって [na-adj] + な + んだって [noun] + な + んだって

Description

んだって passes on something you heard: "I heard that…", "apparently…". It goes at the end of a plain-form sentence, with な after a noun or a な-adjective, and it is casual speech among friends and family.

I heard Tanaka is moving next week.

I heard the ramen at that shop is really good.

I heard he's a doctor.

、。

I heard yesterday's test was hard.

The ん is the explanatory んだ, and って quotes what someone said. A noun or a な-adjective takes な, not だ.

× 医者だんだって → 医者なんだって

Register

At work or with strangers, use そうです after the plain form: 引っ越すそうです, 医者だそうです. んだって sounds too familiar there.

As a question

With a rising tone, んだって？ checks something you have heard: "Is it true that…?"

I hear you're getting married – is that right?

んだって and だって

at the start of a sentence is a different word: "but", "because", used to object or make an excuse.
