一体 (いったい) is an adverb used to add emphasis to questions, expressing strong curiosity, surprise, frustration, or disbelief. It is similar to English expressions like "on earth," "in the world," or "the heck" and is almost always used with question words such as なん何 (what), だれ誰 (who), どこ (where), なぜ / どうして (why), いつ (when), and どう (how).
The most common use of 一体 is to intensify a question, conveying that the speaker genuinely cannot understand or is emotionally reacting to the situation.
Notice how 一体 always appears before the question word. It does not change the grammatical structure of the sentence – it simply adds emotional weight to the question.
一体 is also common in rhetorical questions where the speaker does not necessarily expect an answer but is expressing exasperation or disbelief.
