んがため / んがために

The grammar pattern んがため（に） is a highly literary and formal expression meaning "in order to" or "for the purpose of." It conveys strong determination or purpose and is found in written Japanese such as literature, formal speeches, newspaper editorials, and proverbs. It is the classical equivalent of the modern ために but carries a much more elevated, archaic tone.

Formation

The pattern is formed by attaching んがため（に） to the 未然形 (irrealis/nai-stem) of a verb:

• 五段動詞 (Godan verbs): Use the あ-row stem

  • かつ勝つ → 勝た → 勝たんがため
  • まもる守る → 守ら → 守らんがため
  • いく生く → 生か → 生かさんがため

• 一段動詞 (Ichidan verbs): Remove る

  • いきる生きる → 生き → 生きんがため
  • うる得る → 得 → 得んがため

• Irregular verbs:

  • する → せ → せんがため
  • くる来る → 来（こ） → 来んがため（こんがため）

The ん is a classical auxiliary expressing intention/purpose (equivalent of modern よう), and が is a classical possessive particle (equivalent of modern の). So literally, んがため means "for the sake of (doing)."

Usage notes

• んがため can modify a noun directly:

  かた勝たんがためのどりょく努力をおしまない惜しまない。

  I spare no effort for the purpose of winning.

• んがために is used adverbially before a clause:

  いき生きんがためにはたらく働く。

  I work in order to live.

• This pattern is not used in everyday conversation. Using it in casual speech would sound extremely stiff or dramatic. It is appropriate in formal writing, speeches, literary contexts, or when intentionally creating a solemn or emphatic tone.

• A well-known proverb using this pattern:

  とら虎はしして死してかわ皮をとめ留め、ひと人はしして死してな名をのこさ残さんがためにいきる生きる。

  A tiger leaves its skin when it dies; a person lives in order to leave their name behind.

Comparison with ために

While modern ために is neutral and used across all registers, んがため（に） adds a sense of gravitas, strong will, or dramatic purpose. Compare:

• かぞく家族をまもる守るためにたたかう戦う。 – I fight to protect my family. (neutral)
• かぞく家族をまもら守らんがためにたたかう戦う。 – I fight for the purpose of protecting my family. (literary/emphatic)
