にまつわる

にまつわる means "surrounding", "connected with": the noun after it – a story, a legend, a rumour, a memory – has grown up around the noun before it. It goes straight after a noun and stands in front of the noun it describes.

It comes from the verb まつわる, "to cling to, to be wound around", which is why the nouns it introduces are things that cling to a subject: tales, episodes, secrets, superstitions.

にまつわる or に関する

にかんする関する is the neutral "about", for reports, data and documents. にまつわる suits the stories and associations that gather around something.

にまつわる belongs to writing: books, articles, television narration, titles. In conversation you would say の or についての – このまち町のはなし話, せんそう戦争についてのおもいで思い出.
