Indicating a target – towards, regarding

When に対して follows a noun, it marks that noun as the object or target of an action, emotion, or attitude. It is more formal than simple に and emphasizes the directional relationship.

Contrasting two things – in contrast to, while

に対して can also be used to set up a contrast between two items or situations, similar to "while" or "in contrast to" in English.

When contrasting, the first clause often ends in のにたいして対して (with the nominalizer の) when it follows a verb or adjective.

に対する – modifying a noun

When に対して is used before a noun to modify it, it becomes にたいする対する.

に対し – formal/written variant

In formal or written contexts, にたいし対し is used as a shorter alternative to に対して.
