～にして～

にして between two nouns or two な-adjectives means "both A and B": one person or thing is A and at the same time B. The first word goes straight before にして, and a second noun often ends in でもある.

The pattern is literary: biographies, reviews, speeches, advertising copy. In conversation, use であり for nouns and the て-form for adjectives: いしゃ医者でありさっか作家でもある, かんたん簡単でめいりょう明瞭だ.

Two qualities at once

With な-adjectives, the two qualities are often ones you would not expect together, and the pattern says the thing has both.

An い-adjective does not go before にして; it takes the て-form instead.

• × 美しいにして力強い → 美しくて力強い

After an age or a number of attempts, にして is a different use: "at" a point in time, as in はたち二十歳にして.
