When used with abstract nouns, it expresses that an activity or discussion mainly focuses on a particular subject.

It can also indicate that a person or group plays the central role in some activity.

Variant forms: を中心にして / を中心として

を中心に has two common variant forms: をちゅうしん中心にして and をちゅうしんとして中心として. These are largely interchangeable, though をちゅうしんとして中心として sounds slightly more formal and is more common in written language. When modifying a noun directly, the form をちゅうしんとした中心とした + Noun is used.
