恐らく + [sentence]
Often paired with conjecture endings:
恐らく (おそらく) is an adverb meaning "probably", "most likely", or "perhaps". It is used to express the speaker's conjecture or estimation about something, indicating a fairly high degree of probability – typically higher than たぶん but still acknowledging uncertainty.
恐らく is somewhat formal in tone and appears frequently in written Japanese, news, speeches, and formal conversation. In casual speech, たぶん is more common.
恐らく typically appears at the beginning of a sentence or before the main predicate, and is often paired with sentence-ending expressions of conjecture such as ~だろう, ~でしょう, ~と思う, or ~かもしれない.
While 恐らく often pairs with ~だろう or ~でしょう, it can also appear in sentences without these endings, especially in more literary or formal contexts where the conjectural nuance is already understood.
Both mean "probably," but 恐らく carries a more formal and slightly more certain nuance. たぶん is neutral and suitable for everyday conversation, whereas 恐らく feels more deliberate and is preferred in writing, presentations, and serious discussions.
