たった / たったの

たった means "only", "a mere": the speaker finds a number or amount small. It goes straight before the number and counter.

Small can be disappointing, as in the first example, or impressive, as in the second. A plain count with no feeling about it doesn't take たった.

With しか and だけ

たった often comes with しか or だけ on the same number. しか needs a negative verb at the end; だけ takes any verb.

• × たった五人しか来た → たった五人しか来なかった

Usage notes

These go beyond a plain number.

たったの

たったの means the same as たった and adds a little more emphasis. It also goes before a number.

たった今 and たった一人の

たったいまたった今 is "just this moment". たったひとりたった一人の before a noun is "one and only".
