Description

The grammar pattern て当然だ is used to express that something is natural, expected, or only to be expected given the circumstances. It conveys the speaker's judgment that a result or situation is perfectly reasonable and unsurprising. It is often translated as "it's natural that…", "no wonder…", or "it's only to be expected that…".

The pattern attaches to the て-form of verbs, い-adjectives (くて), and な-adjectives/nouns (で).

Basic usage

Expressing that something should be the case

て当然だ can also carry a nuance of "it should be that way" – implying that the opposite would be strange or unreasonable.

If you make an effort, it's only right that you're rewarded.

With adjectives and nouns

With い-adjectives, use the くて form. With な-adjectives and nouns, use で.

～のは当然だ is a similar expression with a slightly more formal or explanatory tone: かれ彼がおこる怒るのはとうぜん当然だ (It's natural that he's angry).
～て当たり前だ (あたりまえ当たり前）is a near synonym that carries a slightly stronger nuance of "obvious" or "goes without saying."
