ということだ

The expression ということだ has two main uses: reporting hearsay (secondhand information) and rephrasing or drawing a conclusion from given information.

Hearsay – "I heard that…" / "It is said that…"

When used to convey information the speaker learned from another source, ということだ functions similarly to そうだ (hearsay). It reports what someone else said or what is generally said, without the speaker personally vouching for the truth.

This usage is common in news reports, formal writing, and when relaying information you received indirectly. The polite form ということです is used in business and formal contexts.

Rephrasing / Drawing a conclusion – "It means that…" / "In other words…"

When used to restate or clarify the meaning of a situation, ということだ draws a logical conclusion from previous information. It is used with つまり ("in other words") to emphasize the rephrasing.

This usage helps the speaker summarize, interpret, or confirm the implications of what has been said or what is happening.

Notes

• Both usages attach to the plain form of verbs, adjectives, and nouns (+ だ). For na-adjectives and nouns, だ appears before ということだ:

  かのじょ彼女はげんき元気だということです。

  I heard that she is doing well.

• The polite form ということです is used in formal speech.
• Be careful not to confuse this with 〜～ということ used as a noun phrase meaning "the fact that…" or "the thing called…".
