つつ【つつも】

1. Simultaneous actions: "while ~ing"

つつ can express two actions happening at the same time, similar to 〜～ながら but more formal and literary. It is commonly found in written Japanese, speeches, and formal contexts.

In this usage, the main action is in the second clause, and the つつ clause describes a simultaneous or accompanying action.

2. Concession/Contradiction: "even though ~ing / despite ~ing" (つつも)

When followed by も (forming つつも), it expresses that the speaker does something despite knowing or feeling the opposite – often highlighting a contradiction between what one knows/feels and what one actually does. Even without も, this concessive meaning can appear from context.

This concessive usage often pairs with verbs like しる知る, おもう思う, わかる分かる, and かんじる感じる – verbs describing awareness or inner states – to create a sense of guilt, irony, or self-contradiction.

Key differences from ～ながら

• つつ is more formal and literary than 〜～ながら.
• つつ tends to emphasize a deeper or more reflective simultaneity, while ～ながら is used casually for everyday multitasking (e.g., テレビを見ながら食べる).
• The concessive meaning (つつも = "even though") is unique to つつ and not shared by ～ながら.
