ゆえに

ゆえに (故に) is a written, formal word for cause and result. At the start of a sentence it means "therefore"; after a noun, or after a clause with が, it means "because of".

After a clause: がゆえに

A verb or an い-adjective in the plain form usually takes が before ゆえに. A noun or a な-adjective needs である first.

• × 複雑がゆえに → 複雑であるがゆえに

がゆえに puts weight on the reason: it is that very thing that leads to the result.

Before a noun: ゆえの

When the reason describes a noun, ゆえに becomes ゆえの.

Register

ゆえに belongs in essays, legal and academic writing and speeches. In speech, "therefore" is だから and "because of" is から or ので; in ordinary writing, したがって and ため are the neutral choices.
