～かった

～かった is the past of an い-adjective: "was". Drop the final い and add かった. です stays as it is and keeps the sentence polite.

Every い-adjective except いい changes the same way:

• たかい高い → たかかった高かった (was expensive)
• おおきい大きい → おおきかった大きかった (was big)
• おもしろい面白い → おもしろかった面白かった (was interesting)

Not でした

The past sits in かった, so です does not change. でした belongs to nouns and な-adjectives: しずか静かでした, but たのしかったです楽しかったです.

• × 楽しいでした → 楽しかったです
• × 楽しかったでした → 楽しかったです

いい becomes よかった

いい is irregular. Its past is よかった, and words that end in いい follow it: かっこよかった.

• × いかった → よかった

Plain form

Without です the sentence is plain, the way you talk to friends and family.

In front of a noun

The plain form can stand in front of a noun: おいしかったらあめんラーメン is "the ramen that was good".

Related forms

The negative is くない (高くない) and the negative past くなかった (高くなかった) – that くない with かった on the end.
