～かった

To express that something was a certain way using an い-adjective, you conjugate it into its past form by dropping the final い and adding かった.

Forming the past tense

Affirmative past: Remove い and add かった

• たかい高い → 高かった (was expensive)
• さむい寒い → 寒かった (was cold)
• たのしい楽しい → 楽しかった (was fun)

Negative past: Remove い and add くなかった

• たかい高い → 高くなかった (was not expensive)
• さむい寒い → 寒くなかった (was not cold)

For polite speech, simply add です after the conjugated form:

Exception: いい (good)

The adjective いい (good) is irregular. Its past form is based on the original form よい:

• いい → よかった (was good)
• いい → よくなかった (was not good)

Usage notes

The past tense of い-adjectives works just like the non-past form – it can describe nouns directly or serve as the predicate of a sentence. Remember that です here is purely for politeness and does not change the tense; the tense is already marked by かった or くなかった.
