か～か

The pattern か～か is used to present two or more alternatives, meaning "whether A or B" or simply "A or B." Each option is followed by か to clearly mark it as one of the choices.

Presenting choices

When offering alternatives or asking someone to choose, か is placed after each option:

か～か is used to express uncertainty or an indirect question about which of two possibilities applies. It often pairs with verbs like わからない分からない (don't know), きめる決める (decide), or おぼえていない覚えていない (don't remember):

Usage with different parts of speech

か～か can be used with nouns, verbs, and adjectives:

• Nouns:いぬ犬かねこ猫か – a dog or a cat
• Verbs:たべる食べるかたべない食べないか – whether to eat or not
• い-adjectives:たかい高いかやすい安いか – whether it's expensive or cheap
• な-adjectives:すき好きかきらい嫌いか – whether one likes it or dislikes it

か～か vs. single か

When listing alternatives as a simple noun phrase (e.g., "A or B"), sometimes only one か is used between the options: こうひいコーヒーかおちゃお茶. However, when both options are explicitly marked – especially in "whether … or …" constructions – both か particles appear. Using か after each option makes the alternatives clearer and more balanced.
